Take a step back in time to the 10th century, when the Berber people of North Africa settled in Southern Spain, in what we now know as Andalucia.
A great ruler Badis Ben Hadis built a fortified palace from which to survey his kingdom in sumptuous surroundings of comfort and safety. As centuries past and new rulers came and went, but the beautiful Alhambra Palace still stands majestically on a hilltop, just to the South East of the city of Granada.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Spain's top historical attractions, and features some truly breath-taking examples of Berber Islamic architecture that has to be seen close up to be properly appreciated.
The Alhambra has inspired literature, music, poetry and art, and is an inspired choice for a Spanish travel destination.
